THE HISTORY BEHIND THE NUMBERS
At one time, few could access Scripture for themselves. Barred by authorities who deemed laypeople unfit to interpret theBible, society relied on clergyman to read and teach God’s Word. But all that changed with sola scriptura—the belief that God’s Word is enough for God’s people. This conviction opened the way for future generations to access the Bible for themselves. Scriptura exists to celebrate and carry on this legacy. In everything we do, we seek to honor the history that made owning a personal Bible possible—our leather colors being no exception. Each color’s name represents an important date in the sola scriptura story, pivotal moments when God’s Word became more accessible for God’s people
1382: Scripture Translated into English
John Wycliffe believed anyone could read and interpret the Bible—not just clergymen and priests. To fulfill this vision, Wycliffe and his colleague Nicholas Purvey gave English speakers access to an English Bible for the first time with their groundbreaking translation.
1450: Bibles Printed on a Press
Johannes Gutenberg thrust the world into a new era by inventing the mechanical printing press, moveable typesets replacing human hands. Such innovation increased efficiency, making it easier than ever for people to own a copy of Scripture.
1535: Complete English Bibles Printed
William Tyndale brought the English speaking world the first complete printed copy of God’s Word in their language, translating directly from the Greek (unlike Wycliffe’s translation from Latin), pioneering the proliferation of English translations we now enjoy.
1663: First Bibles Printed in America
John Eliot printed the first Bible in America, but not for English, French, or German speakers. No, Eliot printed the Algonquin Bible, a translation for the Algonquin people, reminding us that sola scriptura requires we translate the Bible for all.
